Jessup Duels Westmont for 12 Innings, Falls Short in Saturday Doubleheader

WJU played their longest game of the year in game one; fell 4-0 in game two

LINCOLN, Calif. – After splitting Friday's doubleheader with Westmont, the Jessup baseball team returned to McBean Park on Saturday for day two of the series. Game one was a long battle between both teams, with Westmont prevailing 7-6 in 12 innings.

Mason Sherrill opened up the scoring action by crossing home plate on a passed ball, and Mike Shoenberger followed with an RBI double down the infield line that scored Jordan Yu. Jessup led 2-0 after one, but Westmont responded in the top of the second with consecutive solo shots to tie the score at two.

Jessup countered in the bottom of the second as Connor Franco smacked an RBI double to left, scoring Dustin McElwain, and Kevin Jordan brought in Franco with an RBI base hit. After two, Jessup led 4-2.

After three scoreless innings, Westmont posted three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, but Jessup took the advantage back in the bottom of the same inning. Shoenberger got another RBI base hit, bringing in Jordan, and Dante Peretti got an RBI single of his own to drive in Yu. Jessup led 6-5.

Westmont tied the game at six in the top of the seventh, and the score would remain locked for five more innings until the road team finally broke the tie with an RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th. Jessup couldn't provide an answer and ended up falling 7-6 in the four-hour and fourteen-minute opening game.

Head Coach Trevor Paine commented on the multiple opportunities that his team created in game one, saying, "We had them on the ropes and just needed to land that knockout blow. We had some at-bats with runners in scoring position and didn't execute so well. I thought we left a lot of runs out there that could've ultimately been the difference."

Game two was a sharp contrast to the opening game as Jessup fell down in the third inning after a solo shot from Westmont and couldn't gain the lead. Jordan and Franco were the only Warriors able to register base hits in the seven-inning contest.

Coach Paine commented on Saturday's doubleheader, saying, "We've got to get healthy and get some guys back. The active players on our roster just went through a long weekend of a lot of baseball, and we need to get them recovered and look toward next weekend, which will be another tough conference series."

Jessup will look to regroup for their upcoming doubleheader at home against Hope International. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 11 am.
