Robert Sams Continues Lights-Out Play in 0-0 Draw

Extending his shutout streak to 230 minutes, Sams has been superb for the Warriors as they ended in a 0-0 draw against the Mustangs.

ROCKLIN, Calif. – For the second match in a row, Jessup needed overtime as their bout with The Master's University on Wednesday went the full 110-minutes. Defense was the key to success in this Golden State Athletic Conference battle as neither team allowed a goal, with the match ending in a 0-0 draw.

After the match, Head Coach Greg Lazaga touched on the pulse of the team on the field, saying, "We were really out of rhythm early today and had chances to turn it around but couldn't turn the corner and settle the game down in the first half. Credit The Master's for that. They played well."

As far as the second half goes, Lazaga added, "We started to connect in some areas that were critical. I thought Donovan Carrillo changed the tempo on his side of the field for a good stretch and became a real threat for us." He finished by saying, "We just couldn't make the important connections in our final phases."

Despite the lack of scoring, there was still plenty of action to be had. It took two minutes to go by, and the Mustangs already had their first shot, but it missed high. Moments later, in the third minute, the Warriors had an excellent opportunity as Grayson Romig got two looks at goal, and after a save from the keeper, Romig's second look sailed wide right.

Robert Sams was put to work again, as he stopped a would-be chance for the Mustangs with a diving save in the 13th minute. In the 18th minute, it was Romig again who nearly scored as he was in the keeper's presence, but his header went high.

At the half, each team had several opportunities, but the score remained 0-0. Less than one minute into the second half and the Warriors were looking to score as Paul Anderson made an attack, but his shot was blocked. For the majority of the second half, the Warriors had outshot the Mustangs 5-1, but TMU got two excellent looks in the final moments of regulation.

Sams remained cool, calm, and collected, recording a save in the 87th minute and forcing a shot to go high in the 89th. The stellar play from Sams earned him GSAC Goalie of the Week honors a week ago, and he could be on his way to that again. Against TMU in particular, Sams has a 290-minute shutout streak, and currently, on the season, Sams has a 230-minute shutout streak in progress.

After ninety minutes of action, these programs needed overtime. During the first ten-minute overtime period, the Warriors got two shots on frame, but the first went high, and Mustangs keeper stopped the second one. Both defenses continued to play superbly in the second overtime as no shots were taken, despite the Mustangs getting a pair of corner kicks.

All-in-all, it was a very well-played match from sides that ended in a 0-0 draw. The Warriors will be back on their home field for Senior Day as they'll play host to Life Pacific University, with the match slated to start at 12:30 p.m. It can be live-streamed HERE.
