SANTEE, Calif. – Unsure if they would be able to play Friday after a rare Southern California downpour of rain Thursday night, Jessup and San Diego Christian managed to get just one game on Friday. Aided by their now patented late-inning insurance rally, the Warriors picked up the GSAC win by a final of 10-3.
"I can't say enough about this team and the grind they have to continue to compete for each other even when they fall behind," said Head Coach
Brie Campbell, who celebrates her birthday with a GSAC win.
In another trend as of late with Jessup Softball, the Warriors had to play catch up on Friday as the Hawks plated two in the second, followed by a run in the third to lead 3-0. Jessup had an opportunity to strike first, getting two in scoring position in the second, but no runs would score.
The Warriors finally struck in the fourth as
Kaela Hangebrauck launched her fifth home run of the season over the fence in right-center. A passed ball later in the inning allowed
Emma McConville to cross home, evening the game at 3-3.
Campbell commented on the momentum gained from the fourth inning rally, stating, "All this team needs to do is score a run to get in their groove and (Hangebrauck) brought the power with a home run at the right time."
Jessup took the lead for good off the bat of reigning GSAC Player of the Week
Natalie Basaldua, as her fifth-inning sacrifice fly drove in
Hailey Hiett.
Heading into the seventh, Jessup looked to build on their lead with late-inning insurance runs. Similar to their late-inning attacks in the Vanguard series just a week ago, Jessup padded their lead late as two runs crossed home on a throwing error, and a third would score on an RBI single from
Seli Aholelei.
Jessup made it a five-run game off a sacrifice fly from
Mehana Johns, but the final blow would come on the second homer of the day from Hangebrauck. The two-run shot set the score at 10-3.
Hangebrauck went 2-for-2 at the dish, reaching base an additional two times via walks. Her four RBI proved to be the difference in the game. Hiett also added two hits as the Warriors closed the day with eight.
"My mind stayed true to focusing on hitting the ball and getting on base," said Hangebrauck after the career day. "The energy was a momentum starter for my team. I couldn't do it without that."
Picking up her fifth win of the year in the circle Friday was
Terra Goetz. Goetz tossed a complete game, allowing just three runs on 11 hits and three strikeouts.
After moving into national recognition in the NAIA Coaches Poll earlier this week, Jessup pushes their record to 10-14 overall (4-5 GSAC).
The Warriors and Hawks will wrap up this Southern California series tomorrow with a scheduled doubleheader beginning at noon.
