GLENDALE, Ariz. – Jessup men's soccer (7-3-1, 5-1-1) headed to the desert to play their final two Golden State Athletic Conference matches, with the first being played against the Firestorm of Arizona Christian University (4-9, 2-6). It was another stellar day on the pitch as the Warriors kept ACU off the board while posting two goals themselves for the 2-0 win.
After the game, head coach
Greg Lazaga was happy to see his team stay on the winning track saying, "Obviously a good win for us today. We knew ACU was going to give us a different look than our last time around, so it was important for us to adjust to the new schemes." Lazaga added, "Paul coming through for us when we needed the finish was so clutch, right time, right moment. A lot of guys played well. Eli continues to play strong defensively and sets that aggressive tone. It's a good win, but we are hungry for tomorrow!"
Wednesday's win was a milestone for Lazaga, as it pushes him to the all-time winningest coach in Jessup Men's Soccer history.
Minutes into the game and the Warrior defense was already put to work as the Firestorm got close to scoring, but a header missed right. As the action continued, ACU kept the pressure on Jessup, with four more shots coming within the next ensuing fifteen minutes.
Despite being outshot by ACU, the Warriors made the most out of their opportunities as
Paul Anderson broke away and scored the first goal of the match, giving Jessup the lead, 1-0 in the twenty-first minute.
In the twenty-ninth minute,
Grayson Romig put a hard-hit ball on frame, but the Firestorm's keeper prevented the goal. In the final minutes of the first half, ACU got two more shots off, but to no avail as the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Just as they ended the first half, the Firestorm began the second half with another pair of shots, but both missed the mark. Then for Jessup,
Jose Ayala got a shot off in the fifty-fourth minute, but it was blocked.
Keeping the pedal to the metal, the Warriors put together a terrific counter-attack.
Donovan Carrillo connected with Anderson for his second goal of the match and Jessup took a commanding 2-0 lead in the seventy-fourth minute. Over the final twenty-six minutes, the Warriors continued to play well on both sides of the ball, and they held on to win 2-0 to defeat the Firestorm.
Jessup will stay in Arizona for their final conference match of the season as it'll be a battle for the GSAC-East crown between the Warriors and the Spirit. The match is slated to start at 12:30 p.m. and can be live-streamed
