LINCOLN, Calif. – After a record-breaking day, Friday, Jessup and San Diego Christian were back on the field at McBean Park for day two of this two-day series. Thanks to great pitching in game one, followed by a late rally in game two, Jessup walk away with a four-game sweep.
Head Coach
Trevor Paine was excited about the sweep, stating, "Anytime you can sweep a series, you're pretty excited about it, especially in conference play. Coming off a rough weekend last week, to take care of business and get back in the win column, I couldn't ask for a better weekend."
With the storyline Friday being centered around the offense, Jessup was carried in game one Saturday by strong pitching.
Brad Jones and
Benny May combined to take a no-hitter into the seventh inning, as it was eventually surrendered off a one-out single.
Pitching five innings in relief, May picked up his third win of the year as he now sits at 3-1.
Paine liked what he saw out of May, adding, "Benny had command of all his pitches. He was getting ahead and finishing guys off. Benny did a really good job in the middle. He's just steady and keeps us in the game."
Even with no hits, SDCC still managed to put two runs on the board and led 2-0. Jessup would take the lead in the fourth when
Dustin McElwain reached on a throwing error, which allowed two runners to come home. The Warriors would tack on three in the fifth to lead 6-2.
Jessup's final three runs of the game came in the ninth, as they were the designated away team this weekend.
Jordan Yu drove in a run on a double down the left-field line, and then
Mike Shoenberger single to left to score two.
The Warriors would again have to play from behind in game two as the Hawks scored three runs in the second inning to lead 3-1. Jessup would take the lead in the third off a two-run homer to left-center from
Dante Peretti.
A rough inning in the field would allow the Hawks to retake the lead. On three consecutive at-bats, third baseman
Connor Franco committed a fielding error, resulting in two runs crossing home.
Franco quickly corrected his mistake as he singled to right in the fifth to push across the eventual winning run. The Warriors plated three in the fifth to take the lead once again, 7-6.
Jessup would tack on insurance runs in the seventh inning, as they scored five runs to push their lead to six. The Warriors had three RBI doubles in the inning, as Peretti, Franco, and
Joseph Luevano recorded extra-base hits in the frame.
After a great day at the plate yesterday, Shoenberger finished the day 4-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored. Peretti closed the day going 6-for-9 with six RBI and the home run.
It was a weekend to remember for Jessup Baseball, as they plated 57 runs over the four games, an average of over 14 runs per game.
The four-game sweep pushes Jessup to a perfect 10-0 at their home ballpark. Jessup now sits at 12-6 overall on the season and a .500 record of 4-4 in conference play.
On playing in their home ballpark, Paine stated, "We're really comfortable here. We have a really good idea of how the yard plays. It's just a comfort thing, like the guys getting to sleep in their own bed. We just like playing in this yard."
The conference season continues next weekend as Jessup will welcome another set of Warriors to McBean Park, (13) Westmont College. Game one of this four-game series is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m.
