Warriors Head Home From the Desert Without a Goal

Jessup shutout 5-0 in the final GSAC match of the season; Schedule commences April 9 vs. Humboldt State

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Hoping to improve on the shutout loss in Glendale yesterday, the Warriors transitioned to Surprise as the GSAC season ended with a match against the (RV) Ottawa Spirit. After Jessup pressed early, the tides quickly changed as the Spirit ran away with a 6-0 victory.

Jessup appeared to be in an attacking formation to start, pressing forward with two early chances in the first 20 minutes. A ball sent forward to Madison Leonhardt looked to be a great chance to put WJU ahead early, but the pass sailed too far as OUAZ's keeper came up to collect it.

Just six minutes later, Sarah Foulk made a run the entire length of the field, dribbling through several defenders. Foulk got a contested shot off at the edge of the box but missed right.

Ottawa scored their first goal in the 31st minute, as a pass to the center of the box set up an open opportunity for Paige Murray-Hernandez, who hit the ball into the upper right corner. Three minutes later, OUAZ added to their total as a Jessup turnover produced a one-on-one opportunity that was hit in by Saipress Jones.

The Spirit added a third goal before halftime as Jones rocked a shot from the right edge of the box, beating goalkeeper Emma Whigam on the near post.

OUAZ struck quick in the second half, as just three minutes in, Cassidi Calzaretta received the ball just outside of the box. Whigam raced out to stop the attack, but Calzaretta curled one around her reach. Seven minutes later, Calzaretta scored again as she chipped the ball over a charging Madeline Jern, who had replaced Whigam.

The Warriors did not exit quietly, as they made a late run for a goal in the 65th minute. A cross from Vanessa Alonzo into the box produced a chance, but an OUAZ headed the ball out. On a challenge, Jessup received a free-kick, but the ensuing attempt sailed wide right.

OUAZ added their final goal of the day in the 88th minute, as a corner kick to the far post was headed in goal by Abby Nejara.

With the conference season complete, the Warriors have one final match to look forward to as Humboldt State makes their way to Jessup Field on April 9. The Warriors will honor their seniors pregame as part of the annual senior day, with the match beginning at 4:30 p.m.
