SAN DIEGO – Entering postseason play as the No. 7 seed in the GSAC Women's Tennis Tournament, Jessup opened play against the second-seed Ottawa Spirit. After taking a point against the Spirit on Friday, Jessup showed fight but could not steal a point Tuesday as OUAZ won 4-0.
The loss brings to an end the third season of Jessup Women's Tennis, as Ottawa advance to take on the winner of the matchup between Saint Katherine and Hope International.
After the match, Head Coach
Jon Toney stated, "While the season has concluded, the entire team has made strides with the quality of play and excellent rallies today vs. the number-two seed."
In doubles action, Jessup sent
Aysha Hayes and
McKenzie Hawkins for the first matchup. The duo dropped their bout 6-2.
Juliette Caughey and
Ryanda Guerrero followed, losing their matchup 6-2 as well.
On the performance by Jessup in doubles action, Toney stated that he saw "Improved doubles play by the Warriors with hard-fought sets."
Over to singles action, Hayes began play in the number one position, falling to Guilia Leali of OUAZ 6-1, 6-3. Hawkins followed in the second position, as she dropped the first set 6-0. The match was called once OUAZ reached four points, which occurred when Saskia Wells defeated Guerrero 6-0, 6-0.
When the match was called, Hawkins was rallying to even her match as she led the second set 5-4. Caughey looked to be in a position of victory, as she led 5-0 in the second set after winning the first 6-2.
Karen Ramos-Paglino led 3-2 in the second set of her match.
The fight shown by the Warriors in singles play is a sign of positive things to come for the Jessup Tennis program, as in 2022, not only will the fourth season for the Jessup women begin, but the first for Jessup Men's Tennis will be underway as well.
