LINCOLN, Calif. – For the final time in 2021, the Warriors hit the field to wrap up the season with a doubleheader against San Diego Christian. After the Hawks jumped out to a big first-inning lead, it was all Warriors for the remainder of the year as the season ends with a duo of victories.
The opening half-inning of Monday's action was not one to remember for Jessup as the Hawks plated eight runs. After scoring three quick, Jessup had to make a pitching change as
Brad Jones left the game due to injury.
Nolan Murphy would replace him.
Jessup bounced back quickly, as on the first pitch,
Kawaiola Takemura homered to the opposite field. A few batters later,
Dante Peretti continued the opposite field action with a two-run shot to right.
The Warriors hit their third home run of the day in the second, again an opposite-field shot as
Mike Shoenberger hit a two-run blast of his own. A two-run double by
Jaisten Cabatbat quickly cut SDCC's lead to one, 8-7.
Jessup took the lead for good in the third, but the real action began in the sixth. Starting with
Nick Kasparian, who homered to left, the Warriors hit back-to-back-to-back shots thanks to Kasparian and the second blasts of the day for Takemura and Shoenberger.
It ended up being a nine home run game for the Warriors, as
Jordan Yu later hit two home runs of his own. The nine home runs are a new single-game record for the Warriors, breaking the previous mark of six that the Warriors have met twice this year, most recently in game one yesterday.
Earning the win in game one was Freshman
Jason Riviello, making the first appearance of his collegiate career. Riviello threw four shutout innings of no-hit baseball en route to win number one.
Again, the Hawks jumped out to a lead in game two as a solo home run cleared the storage unit behind the left-field fence. Jessup would tie the game at 1-1 in the second as
Kreighton Tsuruda-Gaspar doubled down the line in left, plating
Connor Franco from first base.
The Warriors took the lead for good later in the second on an opposite-field grand slam by
Kevin Jordan Jr. Jordan Jr. hit his second home run of the day two innings later, a two-run blast to center.
Scoring in the fourth was not done, as Shoenberger made it back-to-back homers as his solo shot made it a 50 RBI season for the junior. Two batters later,
Max Modeste hit a two-run shot, setting the score at 11-1. A two-run home run in the sixth from Franco was the final tally of the day, as the Warriors took the finale 13-2
The total home run count for the day finished at 14 for Jessup.
Starting game two and earning the win, another collegiate first, was freshman
Caleb Markwith. Markwith lasted five innings, allowing one run on five hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
Jessup closes out the season winning the final series of the year, three games to one. Overall on the year, the Warriors finish 24-22, 15-17 in GSAC play. 2021 marks the fourth consecutive above .500 finish for Jessup Baseball.
