SANTEE, Calif. – After starting their Golden State Athletic Conference schedule with a four-set win over Menlo College, Jessup volleyball began a two-game road trip with an epic five-set win over San Diego Christian College. The Warriors are now 3-6 overall and 2-0 in GSAC play.
"This is a long season but these close contests are must-win games," said head coach
Tiger Shelton. Continuing on that, Shelton added, "They outplayed us in the fourth set but we were able to pull ourselves together as a unit to get it done."
Upon surrendering the set's first point, the Warriors stormed out to a 7-2 lead. The run forced an early Hawks timeout but it proved to be to no avail. Jessup kept the pressure on the whole set, leading 18-12 late in the action. The Hawks kept things interesting but it was Jessup who prevailed, 25-17.
The second frame was much closer than the previous with the action totaling seventeen ties. The up-and-down back-and-forth set did not go the way of Jessup as they lost in extra points, 28-26.
Bouncing back strong in the third set, the Warriors began to separate themselves from the Hawks. Once Jessup broke a 10-10 tie, they never looked back as they held the lead until the end, winning 25-18.
The fourth set worked in the opposite manner for the Warriors. This time the set was tied at 6-6 and the Hawks held on to win the set 25-21.
Set five was off to a bleak start for the Warriors as they found themselves down 4-0 out of the gate. Despite a slow start, Jessup rallied back tying the set 7-7, forcing a San Diego timeout. Out of the timeout, Jessup again went down, trailing 9-12.
Not only did the Warriors come surging back to tie the set, but they were able to win 15-13 to claim the match. In the words of coach Shelton, "This was nothing but a team effort. Everyone as a team made this game great."
Madalyn Miller was tops in kills with 14 and
Taylor Dilley ended with 13.
Mallory Pazin did a fantastic job distributing the ball leading with 25 assists. Defensively,
Lauren Toon led the charge with 19 digs while Dilley had 11.
The Warriors will stay on the road for a matchup against Vanguard University on Saturday, September 18 at 2 PM.
