SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Warriors hit the road Wednesday for the final non-conference match of the season. The competition in front of Jessup was the Gators of San Francisco State University, and the NCAA DII opponent held the Warriors scoreless in the 2-0 finish.
Jessup came into Wednesday's match planning to play defensive soccer, and they got to work early on that plan as the Gators nearly scored early. On a headed attempt just 14 minutes in, a block from
Chris Hackney denied what looked to be a sure goal.
The Warriors continued to form a wall on the backline for the remainder of the first half until SF State finally broke the scoreless tie in the 42nd minute.
Offense was hard to come by for Jessup Wednesday, as freshman
Paolo Ionescu's shot on goal in the eighth minute turned out to be the only shot by Jessup in the match. SF State would outshoot the Warriors 13-1.
Again in the second half, the Warriors kept up their strong defensive play, keeping the deficit at just one for the first forty minutes of the half. However, the Gators would eventually double their lead in the 86th minute as a headed pass across the box allowed a shot to be placed on the far post.
Both sides Wednesday were forced to play a man down in the final three minutes of the match after double red cards were issued to
Diego Nunez and Yousef Alenzi.
Goalkeeper
Robert Sams played all 90-minutes for the Warriors Wednesday, recording five saves while allowing the two goals.
Wednesday's contest was the final non-conference match on the calendar for Jessup. After a week off, the Warriors will travel to Arizona for their GSAC opener on Thursday, Sept. 30, at Arizona Christian. Jessup will then take on Ottawa (AZ) two days later before returning home.
