KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The schedule early on for the Warriors seems to be ever-changing. After initially moving their contest with Southern Oregon from Saturday to Friday, today's match again had to be moved up due to air quality in Ashland. However, once the two sides were cleared to step onto the field, the Raiders got the better of Jessup, winning 2-1.
After the match, head coach
Greg Lazaga stated, "We were on the losing end of a team well respected in the west. Davie (Carmichael) has something good going on in Oregon. On our side, we made progress towards being competitive consistently for 90-minutes."
Unhealthy air quality is a recurring trend in both the Rocklin and Southern Oregon area. With the AQI in Southern Oregon University's hometown being too high, the game was moved to Klamath Falls, with kickoff changing from 6 p.m. to 2:45.
Like the action Thursday at Oregon Tech, the Warriors had to play catch up after a first-half goal was conceded in the 39th minute. Alan Gaytan of the Raiders received a pass eight yards out, setting up his second goal of the young season.
Less than 60-seconds into the second half, the Raiders were at it again, as it was Evan Norconk, whose header off a cross from Gaytan doubled the SOU advantage.
Jessup's scoreless streak to open the new campaign ended 149-minutes into the season as
Marcus Tovar converted a penalty kick, trimming the deficit in half.
Tovar's tally was one of the last sparks of offense for Jessup on Friday, as they were outshot 5-2 in the remaining half-hour of competition. Southern Oregon produced 15 shots to Jessup's nine all total.
Lazaga added that this young Jessup squad is still coming together, stating, "With 15 new guys and mostly freshmen, we need to find that competitive nature against quality sides. Several freshman players like
Jordan Gallow,
Alexis Lombera, Angelo Chevez, and
Paolo Ionescu made quality steps in that direction. If we can build on that, we will have a great foundation going forward."
In his second consecutive start in goal for the Warriors,
Robert Sams recorded two saves in 90 minutes of action.
Friday's loss moves the Warriors to 0-2 on the young season, as competition moves from the road back home in Rocklin this week. Jessup will play host to Pacific Union College on Thursday, with game time on Jessup Field scheduled for 4 p.m.
