ROCKLIN, Calif. – The winning formula has been found and must be protected, as Jessup entered Friday night riding a three-match win streak. Hosting the San Diego Christian Hawks, the Warriors showed signs of brilliance throughout as they earned their fifth sweep of the season.
Friday's win pushes the steak to four and gives the Warriors a winning record both overall (9-8) and within the GSAC (6-5).
"We know we have the pieces, and we know we have the talent," said head coach
Tiger Shelton postgame. "You just have to know that we can score and we can play, and you kind of saw it there tonight. We're starting to really push the ball around a lot."
The first set of Friday's contest was highlighted by the run Jessup put on with
Mallory Pazin at the service line. Jessup scored five points with Pazin at the line, including three that capped off a late 5-1 that gave the Warriors the set.
Jessup scored on a kill by
Paulina Harris to even the set at 21. The Warriors then went on a tear to end the set 25-22.
That late momentum carried over to the second set, with the Warriors jumping out to an 11-2 lead to kick things off. Big runs are a trend for the Warriors when taking on the Hawks, as in their first meeting this season, the Warriors embarked on a 16-0 run between sets two and three.
Jessup dominated at the net in the second set, with
Taylor Tarble totaling four blocks in the second set alone. She finished the night with a season-high seven total blocks.
Shelton had high praise of Tarble, adding, "Taylor is a machine. She's literally close to 5-8, and she's a middle blocker, which makes her the shortest middle blocker in the conference. And yet she can flat-out fly."
Set two would go in Jessup's favor, 25-17.
On to the third, and once again, it was all Warriors. A 9-2 run saw Jessup blow things wide open, and while the Hawks did claw within five, five just wasn't enough as the Warriors hit a new gear to close on an 11-3 run, taking the set 25-12.
It's a season sweep of the Hawks for Jessup, and it comes in a perfect six sets.
Madalyn Miller led Jessup with 12 kills, five coming in the final set.
Marina Gonzalez with behind her with 11 kills and nine digs.
Defensively, the Warriors were led by
Lauren Toon's 13 digs.
Madison Marlow was also in double figures with ten. Pazin led the match with 21 assists.
Jessup now must shift their focus to a 2 p.m. match with Vanguard tomorrow afternoon. Vanguard, currently No. 21 in the nation, is taking on Menlo at the time of this article. Vanguard entered Friday night tied for first place in the conference with Westmont.
On the approach tomorrow, Shelton added, "Serve tough, pass good, get the ball to the right people, we should be fine. But that's easier said than done. So we'll see what happens. If we come out, we play our game, and our kids don't lose their mojo, we'll be all over it."
The Warriors defeated Vanguard in four sets back on September 9.
