ATHERTON, Calif. – Riding high on a six-match win streak were the Warriors as they entered Saturday to take on Menlo College for the second time this week. Looking to push that streak to seven, the match needed five sets, and in the end, the Oaks walked away with a 3-2 victory.
With the loss, Jessup moves to 8-6 within the GSAC, tied with Menlo for fourth place. However, the Warriors do hold the tiebreaker with the Oaks due to their record against common opponents.
Jessup was once again led by the duo of
Marina Gonzalez and
Taylor MacCuish. Gonzalez led all players with 16 kills, doing so on a .104-hitting performance. MacCuish was right behind her with a 15-kill night.
Set one went a little long, with extra points needed, but it would be Menlo who took the set 28-26. It was the first set Menlo had won against Jessup this year, as the Warriors swept the Oaks just 48 hours ago.
Needing a bounce-back performance, set two saw both sides play very even, with a 9-9 split coming in the early going. A 5-1 run by Jessup gave them their first breathing room of the evening, which they would hold onto on their way to a 25-21 set two victory,
With the match all tied up, set three produced a performance the Warriors would like to have back, as Menlo went ahead with a 25-16 victory.
The Warriors were not rattled, however, as they ended the fourth set on an 8-2 run to win 25-20, evening the match at two sets apiece. Jessup was headed to a fifth set for the second time this season.
Set five began as a back-and-forth affair, with the two teams split at five to start. Menlo then went on a 6-1 run, taking an 11-6 run that forced Jessup to burn a timeout. The Warriors made a late charge, scoring three in a row, but the margin for error was too thin as the Oaks took the match with a 15-10 victory.
Lauren Toon's 20 digs led Jessup, with
Madison Marlow (15) and Gonzalez (14) finishing right behind her.
The Warriors will now hit the road for the final road trip of the regular season as they visit Arizona next weekend. The road trip starts with a match at Arizona Christian on Friday, followed by a match with OUAZ on Saturday.
Jessup split their home series with ACU and OUAZ earlier this season.
