ROCKLIN, Calif. – It was a night to remember on Friday as Jessup held the inaugural Hoops for Heroes event at Warrior Arena. Donning special edition black uniforms, the Warriors paid respect for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while also showcasing their shooting ability with an 82-68 victory.
"You know, I have such great respect for our veterans and not only the ones right here at Jessup and in our local community," said head coach
Lance Von Vogt in his postgame press conference. "For us to be able to put on an event like tonight was such a great crowd, raise money, raise awareness and honor those vets. It was something special to me, and I'll definitely be looking forward to us doing it again next year.
The Warriors put on a shooting clinic, connecting on 17-of-36 from three. The 17 triples are tied for the third most in a single game.
On the shooting performance, Von Vogt added, "I think we can really shoot the ball. I didn't think that we shot it as well as we could tonight. We missed a lot of open ones, you know, and I know that the percentage is good. And the second half, I think we shot, you know, 57% from three and made 12. So that's a good, really good half, obviously. But I believe we can be even better at the three-point line."
Finishing a perfect 5-for-5 from three was guard
Ty Artis. Artis played 23 minutes off the bench, finishing as Jessup's second-leading scorer with 17 points. Artis has yet to miss from three this season, sitting at 9-for-9 through three games.
"Ty is going to be a revelation to everybody around the country, but he's not a revelation to us," added Von Vogt. "We knew what we had in him, and I believe that he's showing what he's capable of right now. I'm excited to see him continue to grow into his role as the season progresses."
The Warriors narrowly led, 38-36, entering halftime as
Cashemin Williams' buzzer-beating floater gave his side the advantage. Jessup turned it on in the second half, shooting 45 percent from the floor as they outscored UC Merced by 12.
Leading Jessup in the scoring column was
Myles Corey, dropping a season-high 23 points on 8-of-16 from the floor.
"I think that Myles played really well tonight. It was definitely his most complete game of the year," Von Vogt said of his third-year guard. "The sky is the limit for him, and I was excited to see him get into a rhythm today and feel comfortable on the floor."
At 2-1 overall, the Warriors will look to push the win streak to three as they take on Southern Oregon tomorrow night a 6:30 p.m.
