Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Matthew Horrocks

Gonzalez’s Record Day Highlights Jessup’s Record Day

Marina Gonzalez ties the single-game record for most kills (24); Jessup wins GSAC game number 11, a new program record

ROCKLIN, Calif. – It's on to the final week of the season for the Warriors, and with a chance at a first-round bye in the conference tournament still in play, the Warriors welcomed The Master's University to Rocklin. Playing with motivation, Jessup kept their hot streak alive, setting a program record with their four-set victory.

"I'm just really happy," head coach Tiger Shelton said after the game. "We were loose this week, so we didn't know what was going to happen. We felt like that was a really good way of going, to play kind of loose and practice loose."

The Warriors improve to 11-6 within the GSAC with the win. Jessup's 11 conference victories are a new program record as members of the Golden State Athletic Conference.

But that was not the only record performance by the Warriors. Leading the way with 24 kills was Marina Gonzalez. Gonzalez ties Taylor Dilley's record from a season ago for most kills in a single match.

Gonzalez was red-hot from the first serve, totaling five kills in the first set, followed by six in the second. Where she kicked her game into a new gear was in the fourth set of Jessup's 3-1 victory, recording eight kills as the Warriors won the set 25-13.

Jessup ended the match with a pair of 25-13 victories in sets two and three, coming after a 25-22 victory by the Mustangs in the second set.

Madalyn Miller finished the match with 12 kills. Mallory Pazin and Alexis Kepa set up the kills with 31 and 17 assists, respectively.

Results around the conference also favored the Warriors on Friday, as Life Pacific lost to Vanguard. The Warriors can clinch the two-seed and a first-round bye in the conference tournament via three scenarios.

Should the Warriors defeat Westmont tomorrow, they will be the two seed. Jessup will also be the two seed by tying with Vanguard in the standings or finishing in a three-way tie with Vanguard and Life Pacific.

Friday's result highlights a fun week for the Warriors, as the team took part in daily activities and themes at their practices in what they called "Spirit Week." The Warriors will be looking to cap off Spirit Week with a regular season-ending victory tomorrow.

"The girls came in ready to play," added Shelton. "We'll see what they can do tomorrow. Tomorrow's a big day for us."

Jessup will take on Westmont College, a team they fell to in five sets down in Santa Barbara earlier this season. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
