ROCKLIN, Calif. – Year two of what is no longer Jessup's newest sport, STUNT, got underway Friday. Taking on the Hornets of Sacramento State, Jessup made history, showcasing their improved talents en route to the first win in the young program's history.
"We are so incredibly proud of this team and all of the hard work that they have put in," said head coach
Alexis Welch. "Tonight was our very first game in front of a crowd since last year we were not able to have spectators and they played a great game tonight. So excited to make history with our first ever win and it being our first home opener game too! We are so excited to see these girls continue to grow throughout the season and can't wait to see what they accomplish."
The victory could not have come at a better time, as for the first time ever, fans packed Warrior Arena to see this team compete. Seats were hard to come by, as the line to get inside Warrior Arena started to form nearly an hour before the scheduled match time.
The first period of competition saw both sides compete in partner stunts. After the Hornets took the first two points, Jessup settled in to even the match through one at 2-2.
Into the second, pyramids and tosses, the Warriors again dropped the first point before finding their grove. Jessup took the final three points of the period, securing their first lead that was eventually propelled up to 5-3.
The third period saw both teams compete in jumps and tumbling, and it also saw the first tie of the night. Routine four saw both teams take a point, and the two sides eventually split points in the period, sending the match to the final quarter with the Warriors leading by two.
Quarter four in STUNT takes a shift away from scoring in the first three quarters. One point per routine is awarded in quarters one through three, but a total of three points can be scored per routine in the fourth.
Sacramento State capitalized on this, taking all three in the first routine to retake a one-point lead. Jessup then took three to the Hornets' two in the second routine, placing the Warriors ahead by two.
Welch chose to attempt routine six for the finale of the night, and Sacramento State elected to sit out, securing Jessup's victory. The Warriors scored one point, taking the match, 11-9.
It's just the second season for now Jessup's second-newest sport, and for the first time ever, the Warriors have a one in the win column.
Next up for Jessup is a visit to Southern California, starting with a match at Concordia-Irvine on February 15. The Warriors will return home on March 4.
