Warriors Start a Busy Week with a Match at California Lutheran

Hayes wins her second singles bout of the season; Smith and Moeckelmann push their matches to tiebreakers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – With a very busy week ahead of them, the Warriors hit the road for Thousand Oaks on Wednesday to take on California Lutheran University. Playing by Division III rules, Jessup took the loss in both matches but did show improvements along the way.

Winning her singles match on Wednesday was Jessup's Aysha Hayes. It's the second victory of the season for Hayes.

Hayes dropped the first set 4-6 before battling back to take set two handily, 6-1. The match then went to a high-scoring tiebreaker that Hayes won, 10-8.

Also battling to the wire in her match was Sydney Page, as after losing set one 2-6, Page took the second set to the limit before falling 5-7. Also competing in singles play was Nicollet Alexander (2-6, 3-6), McKenzie Hawkins (0-6, 2-6), and Danielle Akabane (3-6, 2-6).

Doubles play in the women's match saw Hawkins and Alexander (0-8) team up in one match. The second match saw the combo of Hayes and Page (3-8).

Men's play saw two matches reach a tiebreaker, starting with Sam Smith in the one position. Smith took the first set 6-4, but his opponent Parker McBride climbed back to narrowly even the match in set two, topping Smith 7-6. McBride won the tiebreaker 10-7.

Noah Moeckelmann won the opening set in his match, 6-3. The second set went against Moeckelmann, 2-6, followed by a 4-10 loss in the tiebreaker.

Also competing in singles play were Aidan Sauer (0-6, 2-6) and Jordan Lenney (2-6, 2-6).

Smith and Lenney (1-8) and Sauer and Moeckelmann (3-8) were the combos in doubles play.

Wednesday was just the first of four matches for the Warriors this week, as tomorrow, both the Jessup men and women will take on Holy Names in Oakland. Both teams will be home on Saturday for a GSAC contest with Saint Katherine, but first, the Jessup women will remain in Oakland to face Mills College on Friday.
