SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – After their first GSAC series victory last weekend, the Warriors are on the road this week to take on (RV) The Master's University in Southern California. Jessup plagued themselves with free passes in game one, but all was forgiven with a late rally in game two to secure a split.
The Warriors had a golden opportunity to strike in the top of the first with the bases loaded and nobody out. Unfortunately, they would strand all three runners on base. But their next chance would not go to waste, as again they loaded the bases in the third. This time around, Jessup would push four runs across on a pair of two-run knocks from
Dylan Cole and
Dustin McElwain.
TMU abruptly answered, scoring four of their own in the bottom half.
Jessup added a run in the fifth on
Jorge Perez's towering solo homer to left. But the one run was lost in the middle of a TMU scoring barrage, as the Mustangs put ten runs on the board between the fourth and sixth innings.
A pinch-hit two-run homer from
Logan Coe cut the deficit in half, but that was the final strike in a 14-7 loss.
Max Moreno started game one for the Warriors but only tossed one inning, a shutout frame in the first. Jessup then combined to use seven different pitchers in relief.
Isaiah Rodriguez took the loss, dropping his record to 2-3 on the year.
Jessup (14) finished with more hits than the Mustangs (11) in game one. The thorn in the side of the Warriors was the free passes, as Jessup walked 15, a new single-game team record, and had three hit batsmen.
The Warriors turned to
Danny Chavez to start game two. Chavez was the ace Jessup needed as he held the Mustangs to just three runs over 6.2 innings, two coming with two out in the third.
"Danny was awesome," said head coach
Trevor Paine. "He's everything you ask out of an ace. We needed a big start from him and he delivered."
Jessup caught a stroke of luck in the fifth, as with two on and two out,
Kevin Gutierrez hit a blooper into shallow centerfield that got lost in the sun. The ball fell, allowing both runs to score and tie the game. Gutierrez would score via the next batter as
Kawaiola Takemura gave the Warriors the lead on an RBI single up the middle.
Four outs away from victory, Jessup let the lead slip as a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score. But Jessup did not hang their heads as a one-out rally produced the winning run in a 4-3 victory, coming on an RBI groundout from Perez.
After TMU put two runners in scoring position in the final inning,
Marlin Brucato came in to record a strikeout for his fifth save of the year.
Paine spoke on his team's ability to bounce back in game two, adding, "I'm proud of how the team responded in game two and the resiliency they showed. The level of execution was much higher and we need to carry that into tomorrow."
Jessup moves to 17-18 overall with the split, 6-12 in the GSAC. The Warriors trail OUAZ by half a game for the final spot in the 2022 GSAC Tournament.
The Warriors and Mustangs will wrap up the series tomorrow with another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Jessup will then head home for the final homestand of the year as they begin the first of eight straight at McBean Park against Arizona Christian on April 1.
