Game Recap: Baseball | | Matthew Horrocks

Late Rally was Not Enough in Doubleheader Sweep

Warriors scored five in the sixth inning of game two; Cole hit two home runs in Friday’s doubleheader

LINCOLN, Calif. – GSAC baseball was on the calendar at McBean Park Friday as the Warriors of William Jessup University welcomed the Warriors of Westmont College. Jessup picked up some momentum in each game, but they couldn't finish it off as Westmont took both games of Friday's doubleheader.

Dylan Cole had the hot bat for Jessup Friday as the first baseman hit a home run in each game Friday. He wrapped up the day going 3-for-7 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Starting game one for Jessup was Danny Chavez, and the right-hander looked good once again. Chavez tossed 6 innings in which he allowed 2 runs on 8 hits, walking a pair and striking out four.

Jessup took the lead in the third as Jorge Perez hit a blooper to left-center that fell, driving in Cole and Dustin McElwain. Perez then scored on a single from Kawaiola Takemura. Jessup increased the lead to 4-2 on Cole's solo homer in the fifth.

Westmont tied the game up in the seventh before taking the lead with a three-run eighth inning. Jessup tacked on a run in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.

Game two saw Westmont jump out to an early 3-0 lead as they scored a trio of runs in the first. They eventually pushed the lead up to 9-2 with five runs in the sixth.

Jessup countered the five-run attack of Westmont with a five-run barrage of their own in the bottom half. Cole's two-run blast started the rally, and it was capped off with a three-run shot from Kevin Guttierez. Jessup had a chance to take the lead with the bases loaded and one out, but a double-play ended the rally.

Westmont scored three in the seventh to secure a 12-7 victory.

Christian Winston made his second Jessup start on Friday. Winston earns the loss after surrendering 4 runs over 5 innings. He struck out six.

Jessup drops to 13-10 overall, 2-4 in the GSAC with the losses. Westmont moves to 20-2 overall, 9-1 GSAC.

Both sides will be back on the diamond tomorrow for the final two games of this GSAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
