LINCOLN, Calif. – After taking three-of-four last weekend in Santa Clarita, the Warriors came into this week in a position to make a run towards a postseason berth. In town is a team nipping at the Warriors' heels in the standings, the Firestorm of Arizona Christian University.
The Warriors turned the ball to their hard-throwing left-hander,
Christian Winston, for game one. Winston got roughed up early, allowing ACU to score seven unanswered through the first three innings of the game.
Joseph Hayden started the comeback with an RBI single in the third. It was then progressed on a blooper from
Dustin McElwain that scored two.
After an RBI walk and a single from
Jorge Perez, Jessup tied the ballgame at seven thanks to a two-run double off the bat of
Dirk Ryan. The score sat tied until the seventh inning as ACU tacked on two late runs to go ahead 9-7.
Perez drove in his second run of the game in the last of the ninth, an RBI double into centerfield that plated the tying run in scoring position. That is where the rally ended, as Jessup stranded the runner to lose game one, 9-8.
James Courshon took the loss in game one after allowing one run over an inning of relief.
Head coach
Trevor Paine looked to his ace
Danny Chavez to help even the series in game two. The righty lasted five innings but allowed four runs to cross home in the top of the first.
Chavez would take his first loss of the year, falling to 4-1.
Jessup managed to record just one hit in the first six innings of game two. Finally, in the seventh, the Warriors began to rally, culminating with a two-run double from
Jaisten Cabatbat. The two late runs were all Jessup managed in a 4-2 defeat.
A highlight of the day came in the last of the seventh as Cabatbat swiped third, giving the Warriors 60 stolen bases this season. The mark sets a new program record, besting the 59 stolen bags by the 2018 club.
With the two losses Friday, Jessup moves to 8-14 in conference play, pushing them to sixth place in the conference. Jessup currently leads OUAZ by half a game for the sixth and final spot in the GSAC Tournament.
The Warriors will look to get two back tomorrow as they hit the field again at 3 p.m.
