Warriors Make Quick Work of Simpson

Gonzalez and Hancock each finish with 12 kills; Warriors record 12 aces and hit a season-high .390

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Little over 60 minutes was all that was needed Thursday night for the Warriors to pick up their third win of the season. Hosting the Simpson Red Hawks, Jessup played their most efficient match of the year, sweeping the night in three sets.

After the match, head coach Tiger Shelton reflected on his team's turnaround from their last match. "We were coming off of a bad game. Whenever you come in on the back game, especially early in the season, it's like, okay, what team are we? You know, what's our identity? Are we the team that was there on Thursday, or are we the team that was there on Saturday? That was the question that was there all week."

The Warriors quickly answered that question as they took the first set with ease, 25-16.

Simpson's 16 points in the first set would ultimately be the most they would score on the Warriors, as Jessup put together back-to-back 25-14 victories in sets two and three.

One of the leading factors to Jessup's quick victory: serving. The Warriors totaled 12 aces in the match, four coming from reigning GSAC Defensive Player of the Week Lauren Toon. Kenzie Carpenter and Taylor MacCuish also added three each.

Shelton added that it was serving that plagued the Warriors in their loss to Bushnell last week. "We missed 14 serves on Saturday. So obviously, we worked on serving a lot, and that obviously showed, and we came in there and took care of business and played our game."

"We served really tough and really hard. It was the big difference tonight. So that gives me hope right now. We've been that team that we were tonight more than we've been the other team. You know, so we were on a roll, and we'll see what happens from here.

Leading the kill column for Jessup was the duo of Marina Gonzalez and Sydney Hancock. The two outside hitters totaled a dozen kills a piece. Hancock did so with a .526 hitting percentage.

The Warriors hit .390 as a team Thursday night, their best percentage of the season.

Jessup continues their season on September 6 when they travel to UC Santa Cruz. The Warriors' next home match comes on September 16 when Life Pacific comes to town for the GSAC home opener.
