Perfect Weekend Kicks Off the GSAC Season

Warriors jumped out to a 14-0 lead to start set three; Jessup scored 46 of the final 68 points on Saturday

LA MESA, Calif. – With emotions high after a huge win Friday night, the Warriors quickly regrouped and got back on the court Saturday in San Diego. Taking on San Diego Christian in match two of the GSAC schedule, the Warriors dominated from start to finish, picking up their second sweep of the year.

The dominating performance moves the Warriors to 2-0 within the GSAC. Jessup started the conference schedule on Friday with a 3-1 win over No. 19 Vanguard.

Head coach Tiger Shelton said after the match that his team tried to look at today's match as a carry-over from last night. "Basically, today was just sets five, six, and seven of last night. Everything we did yesterday, we did today. We just came in and played the way we are supposed to play, and that's a good sign. We didn't change anything."

Saturday's final two sets were an all-out display of Jessup, as the Warriors scored 46 of the match's final 68 points. Jessup even produced a 16-0 run, beginning at the end of the second set and ending with the Warriors up 14-0 in the third.

Jessup's leading attacker was once Marina Gonzalez, whose 13 kills came on a .480 hitting percentage, an improvement from her performance a night ago. Gonzalez also helped to set up her team's scoring with nine digs.

Lauren Toon matched Gonzalez with nine digs of her own.

"Everybody played well today," continued Shelton. "Our passing was better today, and we played our game, and we played under control. It was great."

The Hawks would lead early in the first two sets, going ahead 4-2 in set one, followed by a 2-1 lead in set two. But those were the only leads SDCC would see in the three-set contest. Jessup outscored their opponents 75-40, including a 25-7 rout in the final set.

Two Warriors made their return to San Diego Christian on Saturday. Alexis Kepa totaled ten assists in her first match back at her old school. Mata Iupeli, a former Hawk, also recorded three kills and a block assist.

With two conference wins in their pocket, the Warriors now sit 5-3 overall this season.

Jessup returns home next weekend for their first two home conference matches. Life Pacific University will be in Warrior Arena Friday night at 7 p.m. Hope International University comes to Rocklin on Saturday afternoon.

"I think there are some things we can still do. We haven't reached our peak yet by any means," concluded Shelton, who is confident five days off will not slow his squad down. "We're still working. We have to work on stuff harder this week, come back and try to go 2-0 again next week."

The Warriors split with LPU and HIU last season, with their wins against both schools coming at home.
