SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – In the final preseason contest on the schedule, Jessup hit the road for San Francisco Thursday, taking on the Academy of Art Knights. Thursday's outcome was a flip from the Warriors' previous outing on Tuesday, with Jessup suffering a 3-0 defeat.
The Warriors fired off 13 shots in this one, compared to 17 by the Knights. Ten of Jessup's chances came in the final 45 minutes.
"We lacked physicality and suffered for it in the first half," said head coach
Greg Lazaga. "We allowed them to win the one-on-one battles. We allowed them to establish their style of play and were punished for it."
Academy of Art scored in the 12th minute off of Gilly Miller's third goal of the season. They doubled their lead late in the first half as Breki Einarsson converted off an assist from Kendryx Soriano.
The final goal of the day for the Knights came just two minutes into the second half when Elvis Mensah converted a penalty kick.
"We found a willingness to make aggressive decisions instead of passive ones in the second half," added Lazaga. "Our group has learned from each game so far, so we will continue to learn from this one. I'm glad that we showed some grit to get ourselves opportunities. Now we have to do it at first whistle against this type of team."
Jessup's goalkeeper for all 90 minutes was
Antonio Camacho. Camacho recorded five saves in his second start of the season.
The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday, September 29, for the opener of the 2022 GSAC season. Jessup will take on Hope International in match one of the conference schedule, followed by a Saturday contest against Life Pacific.
