Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Matthew Horrocks

After 90-Minutes, Jessup Settles for a Draw in Redding

Gillespie had two looks at goal in the final 15 minutes; Rodriguez made four saves to keep the Red Hawks off the board

REDDING, Calif. – Jessup's short two-match road trip wrapped up on Saturday with a morning kickoff in Redding. Taking on the Simpson Red Hawks, the Warriors made a late push for a goal, but at the end of 90 minutes, the scoreboard showed all zeroes.

It's the first 90-minute draw for the Warriors under the new collegiate soccer rules. A rule change was approved in the offseason that forgoes overtime in all non-postseason contests. The Warriors played in four overtime contests during the 2021 regular season.

While no goals were scored on Saturday, the Warriors did put pressure on the Red Hawks' backline. Jessup fired off 16 shots to Simpson's six.

At halftime, the Warriors had only gotten off two shots on goal, with Simpson's goalkeeper making the save on both. Late in the second half, both sides began to press, creating more threats of a goal being added to the scoreboard.

With 15 minutes remaining in the match, Simpson was awarded a free kick some 20 yards out. A ball sent on goal had a real chance of going in, but goalkeeper Mya Rodriguez came up clutch with the diving save.

Jessup turned this stop into a counterattack as Kaylee Gillespie dribbled the length of the field with ambitions of scoring her fifth goal of the year. Her shot near the top of the box sailed right.

Another opportunity for Gillespie came with ten minutes showing on the clock. A pass from Olivia Chimienti set up a chance inside the box, but it was denied.

Rodriguez played all 90 minutes in goal, recording four saves. Each team fired off four shots on goal.

The Warriors, now 1-2-1 on the season, return home on September 9 to play host to UC Merced. Tickets for the 12:30 p.m. match are on sale HERE.
