ROCKLIN, Calif. – Following an emotional and needed overtime victory on Thursday, the Warriors were back on the court taking on San Diego Christian. Needing a win to float over .500 within the conference, Jessup did just that as they knocked off the visiting Hawks, 92-78.
San Diego Christian came into the game riding high after a five-point victory on Thursday against No. 24 ranked Menlo College. Saturday improves Jessup to 17-1 all-time against the Hawks.
On his opponent, head coach
Lance Von Vogt stated, "San Diego Christian was well prepared. Coach Cosby did a great job getting his guys ready to go. They've got some fantastic players. They're tough. They're physical. They compete. And you know, I thought that they had a terrific game plan which tested us, and we had to adapt in the game, and I thought our guys responded well."
Jessup needed to play catchup in order to win this one. The Hawks led by five at the intermission, thanks in large part to a 43 percent shooting performance and a perfect 8-for-8 showing at the line.
The halftime speech out of Von Vogt worked, as Jessup outscored SDCC 57-40 in the second half, powered by 13 made free throws and a 47 percent performance from the field. Defensively, Jessup held SDCC to a cold 31 percent in the second half.
On the second-half switch, Von Vogt stated, "In the first half, I didn't think we did a good job of getting into the paint. In the second half, we established the paint, and then three-point shots became infinitely easier because we got to the pain before we shot them."
Having another strong showing in the win was
Cashemin Williams, who scored a team-high 18 points to pair with seven assists and seven boards. Williams is averaging 21.2 PPG through 21 games this season, tops in the GSAC.
The Warriors also saw production come from three of the other four in the starting lineup. Closing in double figures was
Myles Corey (19),
Nigel McKay (15), and
Xavier Lovelace (15).
Off the bench,
Jordan Adams knocked down three triples, and
Ty Artis swiped three steals.
Greg Chew of the Hawks led all players with 31 points in his 37 minutes off the bench. Chew also contributed a game-leading 11 rebounds.
On Chew's performance, Von Vogt stated, "He played like Giannis Antetokounmpo today. So you know, you gotta give him credit. He's one of the best players in the league. He's definitely an all-league guy."
Saturday's score improves the Warriors to 12-9 this season. Within the GSAC, Jessup moves to one game over .500 at 6-5. Jessup sits in a tie for fifth with Menlo, but due to their head-to-head victory, the Warriors own the tiebreaker.
Jessup will be on the road next week for two games in Southern California, followed by a trip to Atherton on February 4. The Warriors will return home for their final two home dates on February 9 and 11.
Life Pacific awaits Jessup first on the road trip, as the Thursday game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Warriors beat LPU earlier this season 100-95 on Horton Court.
