ATHERTON, Calif. – As the Warriors stepped onto the pitch for the final time away from Rocklin, awaiting them was a history-making moment. Taking on the Menlo Oaks, Jessup's lone goal was one no Warrior had ever struck before, as the milestone highlights a 1-1 draw.
Junior
Kaylee Gillespie, who seems to be on her way to a third All-GSAC selection, entered the day with 27 goals to her career tally. The number 27 was one fans had circled, as it matched the all-time program record for most in a career.
Less than five minutes into Thursday's battle in the Bay Area, Gillespie did something nobody had done before her as she scored number 28.
The goal came on a strike from outside the 18 as Gillespie used her patented left foot to loop one over the goalkeeper and put her side on the board. Set up off a ricochet from her own shot, the tally was the tenth of the season for Gillespie, one shy of tying her career best of 11 set in her freshman campaign.
But a win would not be on the menu to pair with the record-breaking moment as Menlo evened the score in the 41st minute off the foot of Kawai Acopan.
The Warriors again split goalkeeping duties in the draw as
Lilliana Fenn (2) and
Madeline Jern (4) combined for six saves.
One more match remains on the schedule as the Warriors will host Hope International on Saturday for Senior Day. Jessup will honor three seniors, Jern,
Haley Norlie, and
Adalin Faria, in a pre-match ceremony.
