Warriors Fall to Whittier, but Looming Protest Could Alter Outcome

Jessup is submitting a formal protest to the ITA, citing a rules violation; Holbea and Alexander go 2-0 in their matches

WHITTIER, Calif. – After a rain out to start the road trip on Monday, the Warriors hit the court on Thursday to make up their match with the Whittier Poets. The scorecard shows a loss for Jessup, 5-4, but that could change as Jessup is submitting an official protest to the ITA.

The Warriors are citing a rules violation committed by the Poets that could swing the point in one of the singles matches, resulting in a 5-4 victory by the Warriors. At the time of this article, the protest is still in the process of being written, and no timeline is available in regard to an outcome.

Once an outcome becomes official, news will be released here at jessupathletics.com.

Taking on a Division III opponent in Whittier, the scoring for doubles was different than the Warriors are used to. Jessup won one of the three matches, an 8-3 victory from Jessica Holbea and Nicollet Alexander, giving the Warriors one point. Whittier won the other two matches, taking two points for them.

The Warriors traditionally play where the team who wins the majority of the doubles play earns one point.

Singles action saw Holbea win again, this time in straight sets (7-5, 7-5). Alexander made it a 2-0 day for her in her singles match, as she won in straight sets as well (6-3, 6-4). The Warriors earned their final singles point via a straight sets victory from Danielle Akabane (6-3, 6-1).

The Warriors will resume the GSAC season tomorrow when they visit Arizona Christian in Glendale. It will be the final match of the road trip for the women's side, as their match scheduled for Saturday was canceled after OUAZ announced they would not field a women's tennis team in 2023.
