ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Warriors competed in their final game of the season at Warrior Field on Thursday against Azusa Pacific and fell 5-1. The match brings to an end Jessup's inaugural Division II campaign and also sends off one of the largest senior classes in program history.
Despite allowing a 13th minute goal by Zoey Kuhn, Jessup defended well in the first half to keep it a close contest against one of the top teams in the PacWest Conference. The Cougars put the game out of reach with three goals in an 18-minute span, including 52nd and 64th-minute strikes by Jaci Maze and a 71st-minute goal by Hailey Hilton. Jessup got one back with a goal by
Kaylee Gillespie in the 71st minute, but Cougars junior Megan Salvesvold shut the door with her first goal of the season in the 74th minute.
The goal was number 34 in Gillespie's career, and it was also the final one of her collegiate career. Gillespie ends her time in Rocklin as the program's all-time leading goal scorer.
After failing to have a shot in the first half, the Warriors totaled six in the second half with four on target, including two from Gillespie and one each from
Abella Waterman and
Armanii Tafoya. Azusa Pacific ended with 14 shots and ten on frame, with two by Faith Crouse and Jaci Maze and one each from Hilton, Salvesvold, Zoey Kuhn, Alexis Fuller, Natalie Kamper, and Sophia Emerson.
Jessup goalkeeper
Celeste Fernandez finished the match with five saves, while Alexia Muniz and Maddie Williams combined for three saves for the Cougars.
It was a very clean game with only seven fouls and two cautions as Jessup's
Mikaela Patterson received a yellow card in the 80th minute, and Azusa Pacific junior Aubrey Dunaway was given a yellow in the 89th minute.
Jessup concludes its regular season with a 4-12-2 record, including one win and two losses in the final home stretch.
