COSTA MESA, Calif. - A SoCal showdown was completed against the Lions of Vanguard University in Costa Mesa. No. 11 Jessup University fell in two games to move to 20-4 on the season.
Katie Blankenheim records her second season loss to move to 7-2. Maddisyn Leffle sparked the Warriors' dugout early with a lead-off triple.
Maddy Ybarra doubled to left center to score the first run. Two innings later, Ybarra hit a solo home run to center, her sixth of the season.
Unfortunate errors by the Warriors allowed the Lions to add five runs in the fourth inning, giving them the lead 6-3. Jessup recorded a run in innings 3-to-6, but that wasn't enough. Vanguard would win 7-5.
Game two started with a bang, as
Sarah Giles and
Sam Lorge hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning. Starting catcher Bailey Ried went 3-3 on the day with three singles. Unfortunately, those would be the only two runs scored for Jessup.
The Lions tied the game in the second and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Game two starter
Terra Goetz saw her first loss of the season as Jessup dropped game two in a nail-biter, 3-2.
Jessup is onto the next as they take on GSAC conference foes Arizona Christian and OUAZ for a home series next weekend. This weekend's games will be Strikeout Cancer, as Jessup honors those who have fought and are continuing the courageous battle. A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to cancer research.
