Golf Wraps Up the PCH Invitational with a 14-Stroke Improvement

Sorber climbs into the top ten with an even par final round; Burdick places seventh in her first tournament of the season

09/10/24

CARMEL, Calif. – Jessup made vast improvements on day two of the 2024 PCH Invitational, the first tournament under head coach Seth Heppner. A 14-stroke improvement on the men's side highlights the day as the Warriors posted a fourth-place finish in both competitions.

The two-day competition took place at the par 71 Quail Lodge Golf Resort in Carmel, hosted by new PacWest member Menlo College. It's an annual visit for the Warriors, and this time, it marks two historic milestones as it begins both Jessup's tenure in NCAA Division II and Heppner's time as a collegiate head coach.

Heppner joined the Warriors over the summer, having previously held a role with IMG Academy in Florida.

A +27-team showing by the Jessup men was improved by 14 strokes on Tuesday, as Jessup placed fourth in the five-team field. The Jessup women also placed fourth after posting an equal score on Tuesday from round one on Monday.

New additions Jerah Venkaiya and Michael Sorber tied for eighth on the leaderboard with a two-round total of +7. Venkaiya posted 74 on Tuesday after an opening round 75. Sorber followed up an opening round 78 with an even-par showing of 71 on the final day.

Braden Armstrong (T-18, +13), Trevor Halloran (T-24, +17), and Paolo Castaneda (26, +19) round out the field for the Warriors. Rex Rollins (13, +9) and Nicholas Schultz (23, +16) were in the field as independents.

The men's tournament was won by Daniel Marmorstein (-6) of Dominican, who also claimed the team title.

Junior Jessica Burdick led the Warriors on the women's side. Burdick, the 2023 GSAC Champion, was competing in her first college tournament since the NAIA National Championship. Burdick posted a two-round total of +17, placing her in a tie for seventh.

Others in the field included Corina Shaw (T-11, +19), Julianne Canda (T-14, +24), Isabella Dowd (18, +38), and Chelsea Wilson (22, +48).

Menlo claimed the women's tournament, while Kyla Layman of Westmont won the individual title by two strokes.

The fall season will continue at Sonoma State, first on the men's side when they compete September 23 – 24. The Jessup women will then make their appearance in Sonoma October 7 – 8.
