Sorber Places Second Following Playoff Finish

Freshman Michael Sorber entered a playoff to determine the PacWest Champion; Men’s Golf climbed to third place on the final day

04/23/25

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After 54 holes of golf, a 55th hole was needed to determine the individual champion of the 2025 PacWest Championship. Deadlocked at -7, Jessup's Michael Sorber returned to the tenth hole to wrap up his freshman season and the first Division II campaign in Jessup history.

Sorber was lights out on Wednesday, posting a scorecard of 69 (-3) to finish at -7 for the tournament. As the leader in the clubhouse, he had to wait to see if a number lower than he would be posted. A double-bogey by Hawaii Hilo's Dylan Bercan on the 17th hole placed him tied with Sorber heading to 18, and a par to wrap up the round signaled for the two to battle head-to-head in a playoff.

The playoff went to Bercan following a bunker shot that gave him a short birdie opportunity. Sorber missed the fairway but found the green in regulation. His birdie attempt narrowly missed.

Sorber exits Las Vegas as the top freshman in the field.

Jessup's men's team also shined on the final day as they moved up two spots for a third-place finish. The team finish included scorecards from Jerah Venkaiya (21), Braden Armstrong (21), Nicholas Schultz (34), and Paolo Castaneda (35).

The women's team was led by a 12th-place finish from Jessica Burdick as the reigning GSAC Champion closed out her first PacWest Championship with a scorecard of 79 (+7). Julianne Canda (28), Corina Shaw (32), Chelsea Wilson (39), and Isabella Dowd (39) made up the field for the Jessup women.

Hawaii Hilo claimed the men's championship for the third year in a row, besting Hawaii Pacific by eight strokes. Biola finished as the women's champions.

Karis Haltom of Biola won the women's individual championship.

Wednesday brings to an end a monumental year in Jessup Golf. The 2024-25 season was the first under head coach Seth Heppner and also the university's first as a member of NCAA Division II and the NCCAA.
