TURLOCK, Calif. – A stretch of five games in three days has come to a close, as the Tournament of Champions concluded on Sunday with the Warriors taking on CSU Monterey Bay. Late-inning heroics looked to have saved the day for Jessup, but CSUMB packed some heroics of their own, as the game ended with Jessup on the wrong end of a 9-7 final.
The Warriors leave Turlock having gone 2-3 and now sit 5-6 on the season.
Jessup put their first runs on the board in the same fashion they've done throughout the weekend, as
Sarah Giles blasted a three-run shot in the top of the third that evened the score at three. The home run was Giles' fifth in as many games as she leaves Turlock, having gone 8-for-15 (.533) with five home runs, a triple, and 14 RBI.
The Warriors then took the lead in the fourth thanks to
Hannah Dominguez's RBI single, but then CSUMB struck back with a two-run shot to pull ahead 5-4 in the bottom half of the inning.
For the next three innings, the Jessup offense was led by
Maddy Ybarra. Ybarra evened the score in the fifth with a triple, plating the speedy
Madisyn Leffle. Ybarra then showed off her own wheels, swiping home to put Jessup on top, 6-5. After a CSUMB rally in the sixth to again pull ahead by one, the Warriors once again looked to Ybarra to deliver.
With the Warriors down to their final strike, Ybarra launched one deep to right-center, evening the score and extending the game past the top of the seventh. But Ybarra's heroics would not be the final clutch moment, as the game ended in the bottom of the seventh when, with two out in the inning, CSUMB hit a two-run walk-off home run.
Ybarra finished the game 3-for-4 at the dish. Dominguez and Leffle both ended the game with two hits as well.
Freshman
Jazlyn Villavicencio gets tagged with the loss after 1.2 innings in relief. She allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits.
Alexandria Himes leaves with a no-decision after surrendering five runs (three earned) over five innings in the circle.
Jessup, having started the season with 11 straight away from home, will finally get to take the field at Foskett Regional Park this week as they welcome Simpson to town on Friday. The home-opening doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
