Shutout Performances Lead to a Monday Split

Himes tossed a two-hit shutout in game two; Ybarra blasted her ninth home run of the season

IRVINE, Calif. – The Warriors stayed in Southern California over the weekend as another PacWest series awaited them on Monday in Irvine. Taking on the No. 21 program in the country, both games ended in shutouts as the two teams split to start their four-game set.

Jessup is now 13-8 in PacWest action. Concordia, the leaders in the PacWest standings, are 17-3.

Game one was controlled by Concordia's Kacie Gossett. Gossett logged a complete game in which she blanked the Warriors, holding Jessup to four hits and no runs. Gossett issued one walk and struck out five as she improved her record to 7-0 on the season.

Of the four Jessup hits, two came off the bat of Madisyn Leffle. Olivia Dominguez and Liliana DeAnda had the other two.

Concordia put up their first run in the second with a run in the second on an RBI single. An RBI double added to the lead in the fourth, and then an RBI single added the final run in the fifth as the Golden Eagles took game one 3-0.

There would not be a shutout in game two as Jessup wasted little time as Maddy Ybarra blasted a solo home run in the top of the first. The home run was Ybarra's ninth of the season, placing her one shy of Sarah Giles for the team lead.

Ybarra's home run ended up being the only run Jessup would need, as their pitcher had a gem of her own to throw.

Right-hander Alexandria Himes got the start in the second game and followed up Gossett's outing in game one with a shutout of her own. Himes held Concordia to two hits while walking none and striking out four. She also ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts after CUI placed the tying run on third with one out in the seventh.

Himes is now 7-8 in her debut season with the Warriors.

Jessup and Concordia will return to the diamond on Tuesday as a second doubleheader will wrap up the series. Tuesday's action is scheduled to begin at noon.
