GRAPEVINE, Tex. – The hunt for an NCCAA crown got underway from Grapevine on Monday as two games ended in two Jessup victories. With wins against Dallas Christian and Fort Lauderdale, the Warriors remain in the winner's bracket heading into day two.
Jessup's offense was sparked by a two home run day from
Sarah Giles. Giles blasted a monstrous solo blast in the opening game against Dallas Christian and followed it up with an even deeper shot in game two against Fort Lauderdale.
The Jessup first baseman closed the day 4-for-6 with three RBI.
Giles was not the only Jessup player to leave the yard as
Maddy Ybarra also homered against Fort Lauderdale as part of back-to-back Jessup shots.
The Warriors began the day by taking on the eighth seed in the tournament, Dallas Christian. A sacrifice fly from
Kylie Nunes started the scoring, and then a throwing error gave Jessup their second run of the second inning. Another DCC error allowed a third run to score, making it 3-0 Jessup through three innings.
DCC scored their lone run in a 4-1 Jessup win in the sixth, but the Warriors quickly countered the tally when Giles left the yard in the bottom half.
Bella MacFarlane earned the start and subsequently went the distance as she allowed one run on five hits in a complete game effort. MacFarlane also struck out four.
Head coach
Brie Campbell turned the ball over to freshman
Jazlyn Villavicencio in game two, and she followed up MacFarlane's seven-inning outing with a complete game of her own. Villavicencio did not walk any batters and allowed seven hits with three strikeouts.
Giles started the scoring in the bottom of the first when she singled to left center, plating Ybarra. Olvia Dominguez gave Jessup their second run with a single in the second. Ybarra and Giles ended the scoring with their back-to-back blasts in the fifth.
Ybarra went 2-for-3 in Monday's finale.
Jessup's two victories on Monday keep them alive in the winner's bracket, setting up a Tuesday night meeting with Sterling College. Jessup and Sterling, the final two undefeated times, will hit the diamond at 6 p.m. (CT).
The game will be streamed live on the NCCAA Network.
