Warriors Hold Biola to One Goal in PacWest Setback at Warrior Field

Jessup’s defense keeps the second half scoreless, but a late first-half goal gives the Eagles a 1-0 win

ROCKLIN, Calif. – A goal three minutes before halftime was the difference Saturday as Jessup women's soccer (1-7-2, 1-2 PacWest) fell 1-0 to Biola (7-3-2, 4-0-1 PacWest) at Warrior Field. The Warriors were outshot 14-3 but kept the game within one goal until the final whistle.

It was a day of celebration as the Warriors recognized five seniors before the kickoff as their last weekend home game in front of family and friends.

Biola took control early, forcing a pair of corner kicks and putting shots on frame. Jessup's best first-half look came in the 15th minute, when Karlee Lywandowsky sent a shot toward the bottom center that Biola goalkeeper Sami Robinson saved. The Eagles broke through in the 42nd minute, when Mallory Palm set up Ella Martin for the game's only goal. Biola outshot the Warriors 7-1 in the opening half and led 1-0 at the break.

The second half was more even on the scoreboard, though Biola kept the pressure on with seven more shots. Jessup goalkeeper Tyler Boren stayed in for all 90 minutes and made saves on Phelps' attempt in the first half and Laura Brennan's in the second, while Hayden Gehring's tries were turned away or sent wide. The Warriors' defensive line of Piper Hansen, who played all 90 minutes, Giselle Torres, and Angelina Mitchell kept Biola off the board after the goal.

Jessup created its own chances after the restart. Kambria Steele fired a shot in the 56th minute, and Kaylee Fore put one on target in the 69th that Brennan saved. Jessup earned its lone corner kick in the 75th minute but couldn't convert.

Lywandowsky and Fore each put one shot on frame for Jessup, and Steele added an attempt. Lywandowsky and Kylie Gutierrez both played the full 90 minutes in the midfield. Jessup committed nine fouls to Biola's five, and Gutierrez (23rd minute) and Mikayla Olariu (60th minute) each received yellow cards.

"I'm proud of how our group competed against one of the best teams in the conference. We defended well in the second half, but we have to find a way to create more chances in the final third," said Jessup head coach Amsalu Fantahun.

Jessup now turns its attention to their final two home contests next week against Vanguard and Concordia before finishing their season on the islands of Hawaii and closing game October 31st against Dominican.
