HILO, Hawaii – Jessup men's soccer led 2-0 in the second half Wednesday, but Hawaii Hilo scored three unanswered goals, the last one with 30 seconds left, to win 3-2 at Vulcan Soccer Field.
The Warriors (2-11-1, 0-6-0 PacWest) took the lead at 10:58 of the first half, when
Eli Vera scored his first goal of the season. Jessup took that 1-0 advantage into halftime despite being outshot 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes. Hilo (5-6-3, 2-3-3) also won six first-half corner kicks and was flagged offside seven times.
Jessup doubled its lead at 58:47 when
Jordee Magana converted a penalty kick for his first goal of the season. Hilo answered right away. Gudmundur Ingason scored at 61:23, assisted by Keita Goto, to make it 2-1. Channing Oda tied the match at 69:57 on an assist from Teun van Gansewinkel. Ingason scored again at 89:30, assisted by Kalen Toguchi, for the winner.
Jessup's
Eduardo Enriquez made six saves in 90 minutes, four of them in the second half. He had denied Toguchi on a shot at 89:27, seconds before the winning goal. Magana led the Warriors with three shots, two on target. Vera and
Blake Moore each took two, and
Diego Bravo added a shot on target.
Maximas Ganesh,
Mathew Daniel, Moore and Enriquez played all 90 minutes.
Hilo outshot Jessup 18-11 and 9-4 on target. The Vulcans also held a 13-4 edge in corner kicks. Jessup was called for 12 fouls to Hilo's nine, and each team received two yellow cards.
Jessup stays in Hawaii for its next two matches, visiting Chaminade at Saint Louis Field in Honolulu on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 5:30 p.m., then Hawaii Pacific at Waipi'o Soccer Complex in Honolulu on Monday, Oct. 26, at 10 p.m. The Warriors then head to San Rafael to face Dominican (CA) at Kennelly Field on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 3:30 p.m.
