LINCOLN, Calif. – Jessup University baseball split a Thursday doubleheader against PacWest rival Biola University at McBean Stadium. After dropping a 10-inning shootout in game one by a score of 13-9, the Warriors bounced back with an impressive offensive performance in game two to secure a 14-6 victory.
Game 1: Biola 13, Jessup 9 (10 Innings)
The opening game of the day proved to be an absolute thriller, featuring dramatic momentum swings and clutch hitting from both sides. Biola struck first with a solo home run in the opening frame, but Jessup answered immediately when Tony Otis blasted a solo shot to center field in the bottom half of the first, 1-1.Â
The two sides traded runs in the early innings, highlighted by a Cody Antone solo home run in the third that kept the score tightly contested, 2-2. Trailing 5-4 heading into the top of the eighth, the Warriors saw the game seemingly slip away as Biola mounted a massive five-run rally to jump ahead 9-5.
However, Jessup showcased their resilience. In the bottom of the eighth, Tony Otis stepped up to the plate and delivered a monumental three-run home run to left field, cutting the deficit to a single run, 9-8. The Warriors then tied the game 9-9 in the bottom of the ninth on a clutch RBI double from Landyn Plaut, sending the game to extra innings.
Unfortunately, the steam ran out in the tenth. Biola's bats reignited, plating four runs in the top half of the frame to secure the 13-9 win.Â
Game 2: Jessup 14, Biola 6
For game two, the Warriors wasted no time asserting their dominance, jumping on Biola's starting pitcher early and often.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Adam Reyes flipped the script with one swing, launching a three-run home run to center field to give Jessup a 3-1 advantage. From there, the floodgates opened. The Warriors erupted for six runs in the second inning, fueled by a two-run double from Jayden Montero, an RBI ground-rule double by Tony Otis, and a two-run single from Quinton Hall. By the end of the second inning, Jessup held a commanding 9-2 lead.
The Warriors kept their foot on the gas, adding runs in the third and fourth innings, punctuated by a solo home run from Cole Hazel, 12-2. Landyn Plaut joined the home run parade with a solo blast in the sixth inning, capping off a 15-hit offensive masterclass that secured the 14-6 victory.
Diego Chavez delivered a strong performance on the mound for Jessup to earn the win, improving his season record to an impressive 4-1.
Head Coach Trevor Paine commented on today's performance and , "It was a better effort all the way around in game two as well as better energy. We need to show up with that mentality tomorrow for both games."
Following Thursday's split, Jessup now sits at 16-10 overall and 12-8 in PacWest Conference play. The Warriors will look to build on their game-two momentum as they continue their home stand against Biola on Friday, March 20th.
