Offense Erupts in Game One as Warriors Split with Eagles

LINCOLN, Calif. – Jessup University baseball concluded its home stand with another action packed doubleheader split against the Biola University Eagles on Friday at McBean Park. The Warriors showcased their explosive offensive capabilities with a 14-7 victory in game one before a 13-1 defeat in the series finale.

Game 1: Jessup 14, Biola 7

The first game of the day saw the Warriors' offense firing on all cylinders, compiling 15 hits to run away with a 14-7 victory.

After falling behind 2-0 early, Jessup responded with a massive middle-inning surge. The scoring parade began in the third inning with an RBI single from Tony Otis, followed by a clutch two-run single by Landyn Plaut to give the Warriors their first lead, 3-2.

Jessup kept their foot on the gas in the fourth inning, erupting for five runs highlighted by RBI hits from Cody Antone and Quinton Hall, as well as an aggressive steal of home by Hall, 8-2. In the fifth, Jayden Montero joined the party by launching a solo home run to left field, and Matt Gonsalvez extended the lead with a two-run single, 12-5. Though Biola plated a couple in the final two frames, it was the Warriors who cruised to a seven run victory, 14-7.

On the mound, Kai Hirayama (3-1) earned the win, grinding through 5.0 innings of work to keep the Biola offense at bay while his team built a comfortable lead. Head coach Trevor Paine noted Hirayama's effort to battle through his start: "Kai was landing his secondary pitches for strikes and he did a good job of keeping them off balanced. He wasn't his sharpest but did a good job of getting us deep into the game."

Jessup earned their 17th win overall and 13th in PacWest play.

Game 2: Biola 13, Jessup 1

In the second half of the doubleheader, the script flipped as the Eagles' pitching staff managed to silence the typically powerful Jessup lineup. Biola cruised to a 13-1 win in seven innings, backed by 13 hits and limited the Warriors to one run in seven innings.

The lone bright spot for Jessup's offense came in the very first inning when Tony Otis blasted a solo home run to left field, momentarily tying the game at 1-1. However, the Warriors were limited to just three hits in the contest as the Biola arms settled in.

Reflecting on the stark contrast in offensive production between the two games, the coaching staff emphasized the importance of their plate strategy.

"We just need to do a good job of sticking to our approach and being on time to hit fastballs," Head Coach Paine said. "If we do those things consistently we can be a really good offense."

"We did some things well and still have plenty we can improve on," added Head Coach Paine. "We need to get back to work this week because we have to go on the road against a difficult APU team."

The Warriors will now regroup and hit the road for their next challenge as the PacWest schedule rolls on. The team heads down to Southern California for a four game series against Azusa Pacific on Friday, March 27th.
