WAIPAHU, Hawaii — Jessup baseball secured a hard-fought victory over Chaminade University on Friday afternoon at CORP Field, 11-9.
The Warriors' offense exploded early and withstood a resilient late-game rally by the Silverswords to improve their record to 10-8 overall and 8-7 in PacWest play.
Jessup wasted no time getting on the board, setting the tone in the top of the first inning. Following a double by Tony Otis, Quinton Hall and Landyn Plaut delivered back-to-back sacrifice flies, bringing home Cody Antone and Otis to give the Warriors a quick 2-0 advantage.
Hunter Hirayama extended the lead in the second inning, launching a solo home run to left-center field. Chaminade managed to answer back in the third, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
However, the Jessup bats erupted in a massive five-run fourth inning to create some distance. Following back-to-back singles by Hirayama and Jayden Montero, Antone stepped up and ripped a bases-clearing, three-run double to center field. Moments later, Otis followed suit with a two-run homer to center, catapulting the Warriors to a commanding 8-2 lead.
The Silverswords refused to go quietly. After Hirayama picked up an RBI single in the top of the fifth, Chaminade responded with a four-run bottom half of the inning to trim the Jessup lead down to 9-6.
Jessup added crucial insurance runs in the seventh inning. Hall reached on an error that allowed Otis to cross the plate, and Plaut followed up with an RBI single to left field, making it an 11-6 ballgame.
Chaminade mounted one final comeback attempt, taking advantage of defensive miscues to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh and pushing across another run in the eighth to make it 11-9.
Despite the pressure, the Jessup bullpen held firm when it mattered most. Loren Iwata earned the win on the mound to improve to 1-0 on the season, while Joey Miller took over to lock down his second save of the year and secure the victory.
The Warriors pounded out 15 hits on the afternoon. Antone anchored the offense with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Otis added a home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Hirayama also impressed at the dish, contributing a home run, two hits, and two RBIs.
The Warriors will look to carry this offensive momentum forward as they play game two against Chaminade on Saturday at 4:00 PM.Â
