ROCKLIN, Calif. – The William Jessup University Warriors played their "Pink Power Match" on Friday, donning pink throughout the Warrior Arena in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. On the court, Jessup squared off against Westmont College, and after an early fight it was Westmont who pulled away victorious 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-14, 25-15).
Jessup looked fired up to start the match. In the opening set, the Warriors went on a tear as they quickly went up 10-1. From that point Westmont began to battle back, eventually evening things up at 14-14. The match stayed fairly even from that point, but a late run by Westmont to score three straight points gave them the cushion needed to take the opener 25-22.
The second set was another strong one for Jessup, as again they jumped out to a quick lead going up 8-4. In this set, the Warriors did not let Westmont battle back as Jessup continued to keep a steady advantage. Jessup would hold on to take the second frame 25-19, evening up the match.
From that point on momentum was entirely in Westmont's favor. Westmont came out in the third set fired up, quickly going ahead 10-5. Westmont then added on by scoring five straight points to pull the set out of reach as they won 25-14.
Westmont again started fast in the fourth set of the night, taking a 9-5 advantage. The Warriors showed some fight for a little bit as they trimmed the deficit to 11-9, but Westmont quickly countered to score six unanswered points. The Westmont attack was too much to handle, as Jessup fell in the night's final set 25-15.
Leading the way for Jessup was junior Jennah Richmond (Napa, CA) with 9 kills. Richmond also added 2 blocks and 2 assists. Freshman Carlie Mills (Scottsdale, AZ) added 8 kills in support.
The Warriors fall to 6-14 overall on the season, with their record in conference play moving to 1-8. Jessup will quickly return to action tomorrow when they play host to The Master's College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
