SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Jessup's women's soccer team played their second ranked opponent in the span of two weeks Saturday, taking on The Master's College on the road. After a late rally with only 10 players, Jessup found themselves a goal short of draw as they fell 2-1.
It was the Master's College who maintained possession the vast majority of the first half. The soccer ball stayed primarily in The Mustang's attacking third, and the shot count ended with three attempts by Master's and none on the part of the Warriors.
Scoring action would be delayed until the second half when the game was opened when the Mustangs scored off a Jessup own goal. After two quick yellow cards on Jessup defender Shonna Fraser (Lincoln, CA) in the 71st minute, the Warriors found themselves with just ten players on the field for the remainder of the game.
The Mustang's capitalized and just two minutes later as they put a safety goal into the back of Jessup's net.
They would end up needing the safety goal as Jessup, even down a player, was not ready to concede the game. After Marissa Sanders (Sacramento, CA) drilled a free kick off the cross bar, teammate Rebecca Garcia (Visalia, CA) was able to collect and drill home her first goal of the season in the 78th minute, keeping the Warriors in the game. Jessup would continue a vicious attack, striving for the equalizer, but ultimately were unable to find it.
"In the first half we were a little unorganized," said Jessup's head coach Jamie Howard. "We worked it out and came out hard in the second half. We had an unfortunate own goal but that's just part of sports. After the double yellow we rallied hard, overall I am happy with the girls and their performance today."
Jessup's record now stands at 7-3 after winning the first seven games of the season. The Warriors remain on the road for two more conference games facing Biola University next on Oct., 8 at 7 p.m. in La Mirada, California. Jessup will return home on Saturday, October 15 to face off with Arizona Christian University at 12:30 p.m.
