Warriors Battle All-Day but Drop Heartbreaker in OT

Jessup Keeps their Attacking Mindset, Kammerer Holds Solid in Net

ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Warriors hosted the Southern Oregon Raiders on Saturday, and after a battle for all 90-minutes and more the Warriors finished on the rough end of a 1-0 defeat. Senior goalkeeper Zachary Kammerer (Rocklin, CA) played a great game in net to keep his side in the game, and an attacking effort from the Warriors put the pressure on the Raiders all day.

Defense was key in the first half for Jessup, with Kammerer leading the charge. Kammerer saw his first danger in the 18th minute when the Raiders whipped a free kick on net, but he was able to lay out and make a terrific save. In the 44th minute, Kammerer saved the day once again with a diving stop on a chance that looked destined to find the back of the net."

"(Kammerer) is playing great, he continued to play even better today," said head coach Robbie Handy. "He made two big saves in the first half that could have gone for goals, but his quickness paid off. He's able to get to spots that his height doesn't make easy."

The Warriors also played on the attacking side in the first half, with a number of close chances coming in the first 15 minutes. In just the seventh minute, junior Joseph Tappero (Rocklin, CA) placed a free kick into the middle of the box, but a defender headed it out. In the final minute of the half, senior Justin Mitchell headed a ball that looked poised for a goal, but a great save denied the chance.

In the second half, Jessup stepped up the attacking to go all out on the Southern Oregon keeper. In the 70th minute, junior Jacob Rodriguez (Pacifica, CA) received a long throw in from junior Justin Soria in the box, but his header clanked off the crossbar. Jessup's closes chance came with five minutes left when junior Christian Wyatt hit a strong free kick from 19-yards out, but it too hit the bar.

"I felt like we were always in good shape," said Handy. "We had the speed, we had the numbers around the ball…It just felt like a matter of time before it was gonna drop.

At the end of regulation, the game as deadlocked at zero resulting in overtime. The Warriors started out on the attack, but a quick counterattack from Southern Oregon changed the momentum. After Kammerer saved a breakaway shot attempt, the rebound went directly to Brendan Allen who headed a shot into the net to win the game.

Kammerer played all 95-minutes and finished with the 2 saves, a large factor in why the Warriors kept in the game all day long. On the offensive edge, Jessup fired 12 shots with 4 going on frame.

The Warriors return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Oakland to square off with Holy Names University. Jessup returns home on September 14 to play the University of California-Merced.
