Lady Warriors Take Early Lead, No. 9 Vanguard Battle Back for 2-1 Win

Lettington Nets First Half Goal to Give Jessup Lead, Vanguard Scores Two Late Goals to Steal Victory

ROCKLIN, Calif. – After picking up their first point in the GSAC standings their last time out, the William Jessup University women's soccer squad looked to seek revenge on No. 9 Vanguard University, after the Lions topped Jessup 5-0 last month. Jessup took an early lead and held on to it for quite a while, but two late goals by Vanguard stole the victory by the final of 2-1.

"Vanguard is a nationaly ranked opponent for a very good reason," said head coach Rachel Constantini. "They are very disciplined and athletic, however today we were able to put the ball in the back of the net and control the game in the first half."

After both sides battled back-and-forth for the first twenty minutes, Jessup was able to strike first in the 23rd minute. Sophomore Hannah Lettington (Orangevale, CA) found the net for her third goal of the season, coming off of an assist from sophomore Kalena Young (Folsom, CA).

The Warriors did a good job of holding on to their lead, as they shifted into a defensive formation. In the first half, Vanguard outshot Jessup 6-5 but the Warriors did hold a 1-0 lead.

As the second half started, Vanguard was able to even up the match in the 50th minute, setting the score at 1-1. A battle for the ball in the box was deflected to Hayley Gonzales of the Lions, who was able to shoot the ball into the lower left corner of the goal to put her side on the board.

"We started the second half flat and allowed Vanguard to score early, but our defensive efforts kept us in the game the entire 90 minutes," Constantini commented.

Both sides stayed tied for the next twenty-five minutes, until the Lions were able to steal the lead away in the 75th minute. A Lions corner kick by Hayley Bruce was headed in by Alex Bachman to put Vanguard 2-1, a lead they would not surrender.

Senior Brianna Evans (Roseville, CA) got the start in goal once again for the Warriors. Evans played all 90-minutes for Jessup, allowing the two goals and recording 6 saves. Haley Magana of Vanguard allowed one goal while making 3 saves.

The loss drops Jessup's record to 4-8-1 overall on the season. In conference play, Jessup holds a record of 0-4-1 with just one point in the standings.

"These girls exhibit the spirit and determination that is necesary to keep up with a nationaly ranked opponent," stated Constantini. "Our growth and progress is evident not only in the score line but also in the support the girls give each other on and off the field."

Jessup will get back on the field on Saturday, as they will play host to another Golden State Athletic Conference foe in the form of San Diego Christian College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and will be the only meeting between the two sides.
