SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - After fighting two hard sets to keep up with nationally ranked No. 2 Westmont, the Warriors earned the third set to be the first team in the GSAC this season to take a set away from Westmont.
"Our focus tonight was to serve tough, distribute the ball on offense, and never let a ball drop without at least one player going after it," said head coach Shasta Millhollin. "We know that all of these things are things we can control."
The Lady Warriors collected 16 points in the first two outings in Santa Barbara with 18 total kills, Makenzie Reeder-Esparza earning 7 alone. Going into the third set Jessup was determined to stick to the game plan.
Down 17-20, the Warriors worked hard to tie it up (22-22) with senior Jennah Richmond and freshman Taylor Jacky posting kills. Knotted at 23, Jessup was awarded the ball on an attack error by Westmont taking the one-point advantage as Reeder-Esparza sealed the set with an assist from Kacey Berger to take it 25-23.
"Westmont is obviously one of the top teams in the country, and we knew we were in for a great match tonight," stated Millhollin. "Our team stuck to the game plan very well and ended up snagging a set!"
With two back-to-back kills to start the fourth set, the Warriors continued to show resilience against the ranked opponent, but the number 16 showed face for the third time as Westmont took the final set and the 3-1 victory.
Jessup will travel to The Master's University to take on the Mustangs tomorrow at 4pm. "We are looking forward to rolling this momentum into tomorrow's match against The Master's," said Millhollin.
