VALLEJO, Calif. – With two-minutes remaining the game, the lights in the gym at the California Maritime Academy went out. Jessup's shooting was that good in the second half Friday, as after a narrow win at home on Opening Night this past Monday, the Warriors improved to 2-0 on the season with an 80-68 victory.
Maritime had the game even with just under seven-minutes to go Friday night, but it was a dunk by senior
Micheal Patterson (Amarillo, TX) that sparked a surge of momentum.
Patterson connected on a three-point-play his previous possession, drawing the foul on a monstrous dunk. After a Keelhauler and-one of their own, Patterson nearly ripped the rim off, screaming at the top of his lungs as he came down, firing up everyone on the Jessup bench as he celebrated his second straight dunk.
The dunk sparked a charge where Jessup would push a lead up to their highest point of the game, 14, securing victory in their clutches.
Friday's game did not start off as one sided as it ended, as the Keelhaulers and Warriors found themselves neck-and-neck most the first half. Jessup found themselves down 14-10 at one point, but senior
Chris Murry (Fremont, CA) decided to take charge, connecting on eight straight points to put the Warriors ahead. The run would eventually eclipse into an 11-0 run, with Jessup leading 21-14.
The Warriors pushed their lead to 10 with just under two-minutes remaining in the half, but Maritime would come back, aided by a long-range 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into the break with Jessup leading 40-35
Maritime started the final 20-minutes on a big run, as they clawed their way back into things and eventually tying things up. With the Warriors up by just one with under 12-minutes to go, Murry hit a big step-back 3-pointer to push the lead to four.
The back-and-forth action continued for the first 12-minutes of the second half, before Patterson's duo of dunks built the foundation for Jessup's run to victory.
Friday's game had a slight delay in the action due to an electrical problem in the gym, as with Jessup up 14 with just under two-minutes left the gym went completely dark except for the light from the scorer's table. Half of the lights were able to turn on, but the game already running late, the final two-minutes were played with half of the court in near darkness.
Senior
Kelton Newman (Elk Grove, CA) was the leading scorer in Friday's win, adding 23 points while connecting on 3-of-5 from long-range and 10-of-12 from the free throw line.
Free throws were a big part of Friday's game, as the officials called 59 fouls (30 Jessup, 29 Maritime) in the game. Just one player however, Maritime's Travis Arenas, fouled out of the game. Jessup connected on 25 of their 35 free throws (71-percent) in the win.
Rebounding was a key statistic head coach
Lance Von Vogt highlighted after Monday's win against Pacific Union, as the Warriors were outrebounded in that game. Jessup won the rebounding battle on Friday, 27-26, with Patterson bringing down 5 boards and senior
Cody Wilcox (Grass Valley, CA) leading with 6.
Murry finished the night with 15 points, hitting three times from behind the arc. Freshman
Brandon Lindsey added 13 and Patterson finished with 10.
Daniel Rashford led the scoring for the Keelhaulers, as the guard collected 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Phil Randles and Adam Armstead each added 13 points to their side's totals.
Jessup improves to 2-0 on the young season, and they will have a quick turnaround now as they will be back in Vallejo tomorrow night as they face off against UC Merced at 5:30 p.m.
