Back-to-Back Sets Aren't Enough in 2-3 Loss to San Diego

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The women's volleyball team went the distance against San Diego Christian tonight in Warrior Arena coming back from a battle in set one to take back-to-back games before the Hawks took the next pair for the win (19-25, 25-18, 25-9, 6-15).
"San Diego is a strong team with mostly seniors," head coach Shasta Millhollin said. "They are solid, well coaches, and they have a lot of experience and leadership."
The precedent was set in the opening game as both teams fought hard exchanging leads multiple times.  The Warriors took their final timeout down the stretch only trailing the Hawks by 4 (18-22). Jessup would answer back out of the break but San Diego would take it to the end for the first set, 25-19.
The Warriors would steal the momentum for back-to-back sets pushing it to an entertaining match with the 2-1 lead going into the fourth game. Leading the force on the net was outside hitter and freshman Michaela Zapata (12) and pin attacker, sophomore Makenzie Reeder-Esparza (13) both recording season-high kill totals.
Defensively the Warriors battled the Hawks middle attacker Alli Beezer who recorded 22 kills on the night, but libero Kacey Berger matched that amount in digs for Jessup.  Berger was joined by teammates Taylor Jacky (15) and Jessica Williams (11) digging up opportunities offensively for the Warriors.
Freshman Alicia Borges led the troop on the serving line with 6 aces, her season-high, now with a total 37 aces for the season.
It was a lively crowd throughout as the Hawks had a showing to battle the Warrior fans through the five-set match. Despite the strong offensive and defensive efforts, Jessup was unable to regain the momentum taken by the Hawks after winning the fourth set to seal the match taking the final game 15-6.
"We are proud of our team for coming out strong in the first 4 sets. We know that anything can happen in set 5," Millhollin concluded. "This loss stings, but we are fired up for tomorrow's match against Arizona Christian!"
The Warriors will close out their home sent tomorrow afternoon hosting Arizona Christian for senior day at 2pm.
