Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Matthew Horrocks

Late Penalty Ends Jessup’s Season Opener with a 1-0 Loss

Warriors Battle in a very Physical Contest, Can’t Find Scoresheet After Numerous Chances

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After much anticipation this offseason for a new season of William Jessup soccer, the Warriors' men's side officially took the pitch for the first time in 2016 on Thursday, as they battled with a tough NCAA level Humboldt State University Jacks. Jessup battled the entirety of the match, but a late penalty for the Jacks produced the lone goal in a 1-0 defeat.

"I think that we came out really strong and really confident," said head coach Greg Lazaga who was coaching his first regular season match at the helm. "We connected on some stuff early on that we were very happy about, but Humboldt was just able to turn it into the kind of game they wanted it to be."
Thursday's match was a war of attrition, as both sides battled back and forth at each other for the entirety of the match, looking for any opportunity to get on the board. While Jessup controlled the first half, outshooting the Jacks 6-1, the second half seemed to have a total momentum shift as the Warriors were pressed back on their heels for the most part.

On numerous occasions Thursday, Jessup found themselves breathing a sigh of relief as it looked as if Humboldt had gotten on the board. In the 56th minute, a Humboldt shot clanked off the left post before rolling along the end line and then touching the post on the right side. Twenty-minutes later, the Jacks had a header on a seemingly open net, but it took a lucky bounce wide left.

All of that good luck seemed to have run out in the 78th minute, after senior goalkeeper Nick Schnable (Rocklin, CA) collided with a player going for a loose ball, the Jacks were awarded a penalty. Schnable saved the penalty attempt, but Humboldt was able to put it in on the rebound for the match's only goal.

One of the most notable facets of Thursday's game was the numerous stoppages of play. Both sides looked very eager to get back on the pitch, and it showed as the center blew his whistle on 45 fouls, and 6 cautions. Jessup was issued three yellow cards in the match, one each to seniors Brennan Entz (Auburn, CA), Aaron Roudebush (Rocklin, CA), and Alexander Thompson (Rancho Cordova, CA).

"This was the first game of the season, there's going to be a lot of ups and downs," added Lazaga. "Hopefully there are more ups than downs, but you need to get over it, stride on, and focus on the goal of improving every day."

The Warriors will have a quick turnaround before they next take the pitch, as they will be back in San Francisco on Saturday to take on San Francisco State at 4:00 p.m. The Gators played prior to Jessup's game Thursday, and fell by the score of 1-0 to a familiar Jessup opponent, Hope International University.
