Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Brie Campbell

Warriors Rally to Defeat Masters for the First Time in Program History

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Jessup women's volleyball fought to the finish in a five-set rally against nationally recognized, The Masters University, finishing victorious for the first time since the two teams have met in conference history (17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 13-25, 15-13).

"We knew that tonight's match was going to be hard. The Master's University is perhaps the most well coached team in the GSAC," commented head coach Shasta Millhollin, "and they have some tremendously talented and experienced athletes."

The first game set the pace for the match as the Mustangs came out strong jumping to an 8-3 lead before the Warriors continued to chip points away, only down 16-22. Masters continued to lead throughout the first set taking it 25-17.

Determined to come out strong, the Warriors did just that by taking a 6-2 advantage to start the set. Out hitting the Mustangs in the second set, sophomore Makenzie Reeder-Esparza (11) and freshman Vendela Williams (10) dominated the net leading in kills for the night, recording 21 of the 39 for the Warriors.

Locked at 21, the Warriors had two kills followed by two forced errors by the Mustangs to take the second set 25-21, evening the score at one set a piece.

In an exchange of points to start the fourth set, the Warriors took off forcing a Mustang timeout with an 8 point lead (13-6). The Warriors took a timeout as the Mustangs nudge back to come within five, but unable to finish as the Warriors kept momentum taking the third set 25-22.

The Mustangs came out strong the fourth set with no intention of letting up. With a large lead, the Warriors went through both timeouts to gain composure and had the ability to work at coming back but fell short, 13-25, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

"The ability to be resilient is a huge goal for our team. We met that goal tonight by continuing to fight every single point," said Millhollin. "Aubrey Pyburn is one of the best outside hitters in our conference. She is a talented six-rotation player, and we knew we would need to defend her."

Receiving national recognition and consistently beating ranked opponents, the Mustangs were sure to continue their pace for the final set, but the Warriors reigned true to their name, prepared to battle to the end without letting up.

The Warriors opened with force leading to the Mustangs taking both timeouts (10-4).  Without letting up the Mustangs edge their way back but falling short as the Warriors took the final set, 15-13.

"Taylor Jack and Kacey Berger were our work horses in the back row. It was a great fight and the first time we have ever beaten The Master's University," Millhollin said.

The Warriors beat the Mustangs in one category for the game, defending the net and blocking 7 to their 4 attacks. Elizabeth Gallon led Jessup with a season-high 4 blocks.

"Blocking has been a huge focus for us," Millhollin commented. "Our freshman middles Jensen Paris and Gallon did a nice job making adjustments on closing the block tonight. Our whole team did a great job making sure that we got up on every ball."

Jessup will hit the road for the next week, competing against two non-conference teams before heading to southern California to take on Hope International and Biola University.
