ROCKLIN, Calif. – Coming off of their first home win of the season their last time out, the Lady Warriors looked poised to build a win streak as they played host to an old rival, the Simpson University Redhawks. After a barrage of shots in the first half, the Warriors finally the net late and often as the topped the visiting Redhawks 5-0.
Jessup held possession of the ball in the first half close to all 45-minutes, making them able to add pressure to the Redhawks' back line. The Warriors fired off 17 shots (7 shots on goal) in the opening half, and their defense held Simpson to zero for the whole day.
The first tally of the match came in the 51st minute, as after beautiful back-and-forth passing from sophomore
Hannah Lettington (Orangevale, CA) to junior
Kailee Soares (Antioch, CA), Soares was able to score and put Jessup on the board. Just three minutes later, Soares added another as she curled in a corner kick over everyone to the far post and into the goal.
"It's pure luck," joked Soares about her goal off the corner kick. "I've done that before, but I haven't done it in a few years. Coming off of that gave me the confidence to go out and hit a few more (shots)."
Soares did not call it quits after two goals, as in the 60th minute she again found the net as she rocketed in a shot from about 25 yards out to make it 3-0, and securing a hat trick in less than 10-minutes.
"Coming out of the first half we just had a rocky start, but we just needed to talk it out, work together, and we came back out in the second half knowing that we wanted to win on our home field," added Soares. "I couldn't have done this without my teammates. They had brilliant passes and we connected really well. Our communication on the field was great too."
Goals continued to come for Jessup late in the match, as the Warriors made it a 4-0 lead in the 78th minute when sophomore
Janelle Schuette (La Puente, CA) slotted in a pass from freshman
Katie Camerer (Lincoln, CA). Just one minute later, Lettington added the fifth and final tally as she beat the keeper one-on-one for her second goal of the year.
"There was a change in intensity and a desire to play," said head coach
Rachel Constantini on her team's ability to find the net in the second half as opposed to early on. "We needed to come and want to finish in front of the goal instead of just throwing up shots that weren't necessarily going to go in."
The season will continue next week when Jessup heads to UC Merced to take on the Bobcats. The game is scheduled for Monday at 3:00 p.m.
