SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - After two down-to-the-wire matches against ranked conference opponents, the Warriors headed to UC Santa Cruz to take on the Banana Slugs in the Kaiser Permanente Arena downtown.
Following suit, Jessup worked hard throughout the contest to battle with the home team, exchanging leads four times up until the Slugs hit a buzzer beater going into the final quarter for the three-point advantage and maintaining the lead in a 54-46 advantage over the Warriors.
The Warriors hit the hardwood running with a 10-0 run to start the game before the Banana Slugs hit the board. Santa Cruz would chip at the lead but the Warriors maintained the lead going into the second quarter 16-13.
In the second quarter the Warriors and Slugs battled for the lead with 3 lead changes and 2 ties. Halfway through the quarter
Emilee VanDyke gave the Warriors a lead with a layup in the paint followed by a deep three by
Sara Vasquez for the 5-point lead (22-17).
The Banana Slugs would sink two free-throws to take the lead going into the final two quarters of play (25-24).
It would come down to the final 10-minutes of play as UC Santa Cruz hit a buzzer beater to close the third quarter for the 3-point advantage.
Rona Chavez would cut the lead to four with her fourth three on the day before the Slugs would answer back with a 8-2 run and their largest lead of the game (52-40).
Despite chipping away at Santa Cruz's lead, the Warriors were unable to make the comeback as the Banana Slugs sealed the victory 54-46.
Chavez would lead the Warriors going 4-for-8 from beyond the arc with 16pts followed by
Ashlyn Jones with 11 points and 6 rebounds and VanDyke with season-high 14 rebounds.
The Lady Warriors will take their game on the road this coming week taking on San Diego State on Thursday and Arizona Christian on Saturday.
